The attitude towards animals in Crete differs from that in the US and much of the rest of Europe.
It is impossible to cover more than a few feet in the inhabited areas of the island without encountering a stray dog or cat
- or two - or a dozen. The concept of "pet" seems to only be in practice amongst the many expats who call Crete home.
I am dedicated to assisting those brave animal welfare workers who are trying to rescue these animals from their dangerous
lives, often at great personal risk. There is resistance to their efforts, both by Greek residents and government officials
(who at this writing are blockading efforts to organise spay and neuter clinics), perhaps out of a long-held xenophobia or
out of embarrassment that their cultural attitude towards animals is being called into question.
The locals who try to help meet with the same resistance, with veterinarians being threated with closure if they cooperate.
But efforts continue because for animal lovers who have visited and been affected, there is no other choice.
